Down-time for the Ram Empty Down-time for the Ram

Post by Ram-bunctious Thu Mar 22, 2012 1:15 am

Well guys, unfortunately the Ram has taken a turn down an UGLY pale road! To start, I noticed gear oil slung ALL OVER the under side of the truck (even on the back side of the rotor dust shields) and a small puddle in the driveway after coming back from a long trip down to MD to visit my parents. This lead to a quick trip to see a buddy of mine, Gary, who works at "Y&T Automotive Transmissions" (they do it all) in North Wales so that he could see about installing a new pinion seal. Next, he proceeds to tell me that he can move the driveshaft up & down about 1/4" each direction which means the pinion bearing is shot and now I need a rebuild kit (bearings & seals) - so I am told, Dodge has this problem alot because they use crappy bearings from Taiwan - I was told to look for a "Timken" set - found it at AutoPartsWarehouse.com for $97 and change.

Hold on....the day keeps getting better......then they pull the rear cover off the diff and out pours the oil and thump-thump-thump..........wait for it........................................thump, goes all these little chunks, not shavings, but chunks of metal!!! There must have been some sort of retaining clip that held the pinion in place that broke all to hell and went all over the inside of the housing. After visual inspection, the 9.25" ring & pinion LOOKS to be ok (no scarring, no pitting, no scratches, it doesn't even look excessively worn), but after about 140,000 miles (lets face it, HARD MILES), I think the decision has been made to replace it also (the carrier and LSD spider gears will most likely remain). So, tomorrow I have to make a call to Summit to see if they have a 9.25" 3.92 ring & pinion! Oh, and the royal purple 75/140 for the rear is $20/bottle (as I am sure Marko can agree) only I happen to need FIVE FREAKIN BOTTLES!!!!!! WOW! This job is going to HURT! affraid

So, does anyone know a lot about rearends? Do you think I should definately spring for the new r&p or take a chance and button it all back up with just the new bearing kit??? I have never noticed any whine or noise from the diff, but lets face it, with this exhaust, I cannot hear much of anything. The problem is that I don't know how long it has been this way and don't know how to tell if the r&p are still good or not??? Anyone????

If that is a limited rear there is an additive you have to put in and it's about $20 bucks for a few oz.

Ahh the old 9.25 hehe I know all to well the ill's they have.. I just got a set of Yukon Bearing's and 4.56 Gears for one this week. I have a spare 9.25 in the garage I plan on building for the red truck to race. Your best bet is go all out get a Powertrax Posi and new master rebuild kit with a fresh set of gears. Plan on $1000.00 to do it all right. These rear's are Junk from the factory but after you spend the money it will be bullet proof. I have seen alot of those pictures of shattered clip's laying on the floor. You can always go cheap slap bearing's in it with a new retainer clip and send it down the road but chance's are it will shit that clip before long again. good Luck what gears do you have now? 3.08?

Nope, these bad boys are 3.92's! This is a 12-bolt Chrysler "Anti-spin" diff (Chrysler's version of a Posi-traction). Well, I finally found out what the mysterious metal "chunks" were after sending the pics over to Randy's Ring & Pinion. Apparently it is what is left of a clutch-pak retainer clip. After 140k miles, the clutch discs wear thin & get sloppy-loose (...once knew a girl......Oh, sorry, we are talking automotive rearends here - almost lost track). So, today I bit the bullet and pulled out the old piece of plastic and bought a new ring & pinion, a Timken master rebuild kit with all new high-end bearings, seals, crush-sleeve, new ring-bolts, pinion nut and assembly/alignment paint. Oh yeah, and a new set of clutches (with the reaitners) - all from Randy's. I did not go for the Yukon setup that has the little springs in it that hold the clutches together because it was much more and I have already broke the bank!!! I am just hoping that the carrier has no cracks in it and the all the spiders and axles are ok. I still have to find a way to pay for the labor for all this - guess i will have to start whoring myself out!!! No OR, GET YOU GUYS TO BUY SOME SHOW BOARDS FROM ME???? COME-ON BOYS, YOU KNOW YOU WANT ONE!!! LET'S MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!! DADDY'S GOTTA GET HIS RIDE ON THE ROAD!!! Exclamation

Charles, the Royal Purple 75w140 oil I had in the rear and plan on putting the same back in has the "friction modifier" already in it...there is no need to add any additional. It says right on the bottle - made for limited slip differentials - no additeves needed. Thanks for the heads up though!

UPDATE:
Well guys, it's not looking good for the Ram....now after buying all the replacement internals (new master rebuild bearing & seal kit, new limited slip clutch kit and a new ring & pinion) we found out that the internal casting seat & cap that holds the carrier in the differential has been completely grooved out afro on the right side (almost like it was cut with a CNC machine) thanks to the broken limited slip clutch pak retainer clip!!! If you ask me, these bastard clips are a REALLY BAD DESIGN by Ma Mopar!!! Evil or Very Mad
So, now for about twice the price, I am getting an entire replacement rearend (slighty used) and sending the new parts back! What a royal P.I.T.A. this has been! Another week without the old Hemi!!!

Bad Side...(passenger) I am so lucky that the cap bolts did not blow thru the thread bosses (only about 1mm of material left here)!!!Down-time for the Ram 2012-014
Good side...(driver)Down-time for the Ram 2012-015
Good cap...Down-time for the Ram 2012-016
Bad cap...Down-time for the Ram 2012-017

Thanks guys....I am only putting the same thing back under it to get me over the hump - once I recover from this unexpected hit, I am hoping to be able to hav the rear rebuilt with the high-end Timken bearings and maybe an upgraded Yukon possi unit that has springs in it to keep the clutch discs from getting all sloppy (the cause for the clip failure). With this loud-a$$ exhaust, I had no idea that anything was even wrong with the truck until i saw the gear oil leak.....no signs of any jerking or rough ride. I guess any grinding was baffled by the exhaust note??? It would be different if I had a passenger compartment over top of the rear axle, like in the case of a Durango or such.

Oh, and Charklie ("mod-pup"......I mean "dog"), how many times are you going to spell my name WRONG guy?!?!?!?! !@#$%^&* ............sorry, I was going to let it go after the 6th or 7th time, but after the two weeks I just had, I am a bit chappy & raw! Suspect

I have heard these rears have a lousy oiling design from the factory, they don't get enough lube up to the pinion bearing. This makes me really happy because i have the same thing under the Rumble Bee!!

Have not heard that about the oiling system - the real weak point is the limited slip clutches & their retainer clips...that & the cheap taiwan bearings are a bad mix! I use the higher quality fully synthetic royal purple gear oil, so even if it gets starved for oil, it will be protected better than the conventional oil. I am not happy either way about having to get another whole new rearend (axle housing & all)!

Thanks Marko!

UPDATE: Great news boyz! The Ram is BACK IN ACTION ONCE AGAIN!!! I am picking her up tomorrow morning with a whole new rear-end (well, new enough that my money could buy anyway = only 40k original miles on this axle assembly - all freshened up & full of new Royal Purple oil! I cannot wait to get back to pounding the pavement with the Hemi........although, with these gas prices, it will only be a couple days a week!!!
